Students Favorite Classes

In our school many students have different opinions about their favorite classes. We interviewed some of the students and asked them questions about their favorite classes. Most common things they like about classes were getting good grades, understanding what teacher teach them, more flexible with teacher and doing fun things in class.

We interviewed one student of OIHS. Her favorite class was History. Christina likes this class because she's got good grades. She said, "the teacher let them do fun things and play with each other." She likes that class but she wants to change something about history class. She doesn't like to write a lot about the reading lessons.

Another student we interviewed was Indra. He thinks his favorite class is Computer class. He likes this class because he is learning new things about computer. He said,"this class is his favorite because he has gained more knowledge in this class". He liked computer class since last semester and also he has learned how to create web sites, study about excel and power point. we asked him "do you think others students also like this class?" and Indra said, yes, lots of students do, because it helps to learn about computer and we are doing college course(on line) in computer class". In computer class he would like to change one thing, so that he could learn more new things about computer. He would like to do other things. Indra is very happy with his favorite class and hope in future he will do better.

We interviewed a senior stubent of OIHS. Monica likes English class very much. She said, "I'm proud of my grades and what I have achieved in this class". The hardest things she has done in English class is sitting still in her chair because she likes to move around the class. Her best day in English class, was the day when she had free time to listen to music. We asked her, "why do you like that class so much? and said" It's always fun, the teacher is nice and I enjoy going to that class. That means she really enjoy English class and making a good progress. Through, this class she knows the teacher should be patience while teaching. Monica is working hard in class and also excited to graduate from High School.

All students have different views and ideas about their favorite class. They all are enjoying their classes and hoping to do better in the future. Even tough, their favorite classes are not the same, the students are still related because they have favorite classes.

"How would you feel once this rule applicable?"I will feel happy because we are not going to have anymore teachers on our back telling us to throw gum away"How do you things your friends will react?"Other students will be happy and shouting about the new good news."Do you things student will watch their back by throwing their gum ?"I think it depend on people we all have different education and manners. By other reason was for call, some of parents they worry about their kids and want to check if their kids are safe" I also ask her about her feeling of cell phone. "I feel like sometime my parent calling me to get help or call me to check that I'm safe at school" she said that other student agree with her because they want to use cell phone. "If the teacher worry about student using their you can ask them to go talk close to you or talk with their parent with student phone"

Student Journey to the United States

In our school, there were a lot of students who came from different countries. They all have to make a journey in order to come to the United States. We interviewed some student about how they came to the United States. We asked them questions about how they felt and what they did when they were moving to the United States.

We interviewed a boy named Kobe. He is from Africa. He came here with his brother. We asked him, what was the hardest thing you did before you moved to the United States. He said, "the hardest thing I did before coming to the United States was to learn English." In the USA he lived in Oakland California. He said "I came to the USA because I wanted to have a better life and help people who lived in Africa and became sick." He also said,” he felt sad when he left his family in Africa.” When he got here he said he felt shy because people were making fun of the way he looked and talked. We also asked him about what he thought about people who were sick in Africa and his answer was.” I think it's bad because the president of Africa is not providing things to help them as he is supposed to do it."

We also interviewed a girl named Nara. She is from Mongolia. She Came here with her sister, and her brother. The hardest thing she did when she was moved to the united state was to seat in airplane was very bored until she came here. She said, "I arrived in 02/00/07 to the USA." Now she lives in Oakland. When we asked her why she came to the United States, she said, " I wanted to have a better life, to get a decent education, and become a professional after some day. We also get her to tell us how she felt when she left her home country, and she said,” I felt really upset because my grandmother and my friends stayed there. She also told us, she feels happy now, even though it was hard at first but it's getting better day-by-day. She said, life is getting a lot more easy in this country." Her life would be the same if she lived in Mongolia.

Arturo is another student that we have the opportunity to interview. He was from Mexico. He came here with his mom, dad, and his sister as well. He said he was sick and hungry while his family and he was moving to the United States that was the hardest thing he faced. He said he arrived to the USA in September 4th 2008. He said "I came here because I wanted to have a quality education, make my future bright and earn more money." We asked him. How did you feel when you left your country? " he said I Felt bad and unhappy because I knew I miss a lot my family, friends and my country." Now he feels happy because he is with his family in the USA. On his first day of school in the US, he felt very shy and happy at the same time. We asked him if he thought he will achieve his goals in the future and he said. "I had a problem in the checkpoints because they checked everything I had." He said it was easy to enroll at OIHS. He also said he did his medical test already.

Childhood

Every person has a good memory of their childhood that will follow them into their adult lives. In 12th grade we have a big project to do. We have 3 people in our group. We need to interview OIHS students or teachers from different countries. Our group’s topic is childhood memories. I will be writing about one teacher and two students about their childhoods.

Ms. Raquel Franker was born on January 12, 1970, in Los Angeles. When she was 12 years old she liked to do gymnastics and hang out with her friends. When she went to college in Santa Cruz she had to leave her homeland. She has good memories of her childhood because she had a lot friends and life was easier. Ms. Raquel also has bad memories of her childhood. She remembers her brother beating her up when they fought. Overall she was happy about her childhood because she had a family who loved her. If she had the chance to go back to her childhood, she would not change anything because she would not be the same person.

Suthida is a Thai student at OIHS. She was born on June 19, 1990, in the country of Thailand, the country that lies on the north part close to Lao. That city she was born in was called Nongkia. She came to U.S on June 19, 2007. Now Suthida is an OIHS student. She works on the OIHS basketball team and has more friends in her life. When Kamala interviewed her about her childhood she said “When I was young, I liked to read the cartoon books.” She left her homeland because her dad wanted her to live with him in the United States. When she left her homeland she felt upset because she left her older brother behind. She misses him very much. However, the United States changed her life because in Thailand she worked very hard. But in the U.S everything is easy and she can live with her dad. She thinks both countries are good because in the U.S she can make a lot of money, but Thailand is her home so she will go back one day.

Nestor Roman was born on February 21 1991, in Impala Chiquimula. When Beatrice interviewed him about his childhood he said, “When I was young, I liked to play soccer and hang out with my friends.” He left his homeland because he wanted to have a better life. He does not feel anything special about the question Beatrice asked. He is very happy about his family because they all love him.

Everyone’s childhood is different. You can have good memories or bad memories. If you want to have good memories of your childhood, you need to do things that will become good memories.

Role Model

Who is your role model? Maybe is an athlete, an actor or a leader. But everyone have their own role model in their life. Role model can change our life. Those are three people talk about their role model.

One energetic boy of 12th grade is Madan Rana. There are so many things that he been do for his country. Same for some people, I starting to got him when he was giving a speech. He always does good thing for other people because he has good role model in his life. Obama is Madan’s role model and can be our role model because he is the one that take care of everyone that in the Unite State, he try his best to make Americans get better life, and try to let American out of financial storm. Yes, I feel well about him as people respect him. He said, “Do not do bad things to other people and always do good things to other”.
Madan (lift) Hardeep (right)

Hardeep is 12th grade student of Oakland International High School. He always has a role model in his life. Hardeep’s rode model is a freedom fighter from India. After he reads a book about he helps his country to get freedom from British people. That why Hardeep follows he and became his role model. He feels good that he has a role model like that. He changes Hardeep’s life to do well something to help other people because him said, “Don't say badly, don't listen badly don't look bad things.” Hardeep still remember this motto to help him do better.

Roji Limbu role model is Motherteresa. The thing that makes she follows her is she is kind hearted, peace loving women and she also she loves to help other. She started taking her as her role model when was kid. Since she learned about her then she loves to follow her. She's the nun and she actually doesn’t have idea about where she was born. But she knows that she work lots of her lifetime in India. Roji took her as her role model because Mother Teresa's work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971). Also she is known for helping the poor and feeding the starved children in India and lots of other part of world. She teaches the world about peace, love, and happiness. Roji feels as lucky to talk about my role model with you. She wants people to know about her role model.

They all different but they have their role model in their life. Because they have their role model that they very hart study and follow their role model’s motto in their life.

Should Student Recycle?

Do students recycle? It is important for all students to recycle things. Recycling things helps us in many ways. There are lots of students who recycle thing and there are lots of students who don’t like to recycle things. We asked some questions to some students about our topic.

She said, “Students are most responsible to recycle things in the school.” It’s their benefit in recycling things. Teachers and other persons in the school are also responsible for recycling things. She also said, “We can recycle water bottles and other bottles, we can also recycle plastic stuff and extra papers.” It is important to understand the importance of recycling for all students. We need to put some more garbage cans in our school on right places so students and others can see them and use them to recycle things. She said, “Recycling is very important for her because it helps to save our environment.” We can keep our environment clean and green by recycling things. She said, “You can imagine if nobody will recycle what will happen to our environment.” Our environment will get dirty and nobody will like to walk outside. We will get lots of disease and flu. She also said” “On the other hand if everyone recycle our world will look beautiful.” Our school will look clean and green. Our school can become famous in the U.S.A. She said, “I will tell to all those peoples who don’t like to recycle things, I will teach them the importance of recycling.” At the end she said, “Recycling is really very important, it helps us in many ways.”

We also interviewed a boy named Jack. He is 18 years old and he is from China. He is also a student in the Oakland International High School. He has been in the United States from 2 years. We asked him some questions and he answered same like Hema. He is very serious about the recycling because he knows there are many benefits of recycling. He said, “Everyone should recycle things because it helps us in many ways, we can recycle things to make our school most beautiful in the Oakland and In the California.” He also said, “ In my country I never recycle things because I didn’t know the importance of recycling but here in the U.S.A. he always recycle things and he make others to recycle things.”

10th Graders are Nervous about CAHSEE

by Madan, Jieheng, and Tania

CAHSEE is a current issue which is happening right on February 2rd , 2010. All 10th graders and 12th graders of Oakland International High School are nervous and pretty serious about it. All teachers are giving extra time after school to train students about CAHSEE. All Oakland International High School’s Students are very serious to learn about the CAHSEE essay.

Rosan Sanjel is a 10 grader student of Oakland International High School. He is from Bhutan. He usually speaks Nepali at home, and this made it harder for Rosan to speak more English. He is struggling a lot to pass CAHSEE. He said, “It is the first time that I taking the CAHSEE, I don’t know what they are going to ask in CAHSEE.” With a pretty smile he said, “I saw sample questions in Internet about CAHSEE and it was very easy”. However, he is still not sure what to write and how to write.

Jack came from china. He is also a 10th grade student at Oakland International High School student. “Jack is a good student if he tries hard in class,” his teacher Mr. Toby said. Jack wants to pass the CAHSEE the first time, but he said, “I am not sure how to pass it.” He is trying hard to get through it.

One of the 10th grade girls in Oakland International High School is Pranita. She is from Nepal. She is also nervous about CAHSEE. After her interview, we found that she will ask her father for help.

College Life

by Monica, Dalia, and Tek

My group interviewed people who have experienced college, what it is like and what their experiences were like. We interviewed Emmanuel, a student at Laney College, Mr. Manzar, who attended college in London, and Ms. Liza.

Emmanuel is a cool guy with a lot of ambitions. He really works hard toward his educational goals and loves to make new friends. His friends call him Acostic. He did not have a high school diploma so he took an entrance exam (English and math) before he got accepted in college. He started going to college in the fall of 2007. Emmanuel is thinking of transferring to a four year university which is UCLA probably. He is still waiting to hear from the school. He prefers college over university because college helps you get ready for university. It makes you mature and is also influential in life activities. Emmanuel felt overwhelmed and couldn't wait to be in a diverse environment. He says he absolutely advises high school graduates to attend Laney college. ''Laney college is one of the best colleges of all time. The costs are very cheap and you take class according to your own pace," he says. Emmanuel says community college is very different from a four year college because community college helps you get ready/prepared for the bigger task (university).

Our second college interviewee is a woman named Ms. Liza. She was involved in many after school activities. For example, she volunteered with people with disabilities and took sign language. She started going to college when she was 18 years old after she graduated high school. Ms. Liza did not think about transferring to a university because she liked her college. She preferred to go to college instead of a university because she wanted to go to a small college and wanted small classes. Ms. Liza said college was very exciting. Ms. Liza's advice to a high school graduate is that going to college will help you have more options and in college you can study many interesting things. ''I think it can be a very good place to learn about themselves and the world," Ms. Liza said. Ms Liza thinks community college is very different than a four year college because a four year college is more expensive and you get a different degree. She recommends understanding the difference and choosing the best school for your needs.

Finally, our last interviewee is Mr. Manzar, a teacher at Oakland international high school nicknamed "Manz." Mr. Manzar was actually a college student in London, and he had to take A.P classes before he got accepted to college. He started going to college in 1989 about 21 years ago. Mr. Manzar did not think about transferring to a university because he loved college too much. The reason why Mr. Manzar preferred college better than university is because college provided students with additional skills to get students get ready for university. "I felt good at first but also nervous because I had too much work to do and also I would advise students to go to college because you can make a big difference and get a job." Mr. Manzar says you can’t really compare community college to a university because college helps you get prepared for a university. He says college life is very hard and you have lots of things to do.

The Students Who Are the Only One from Their Countries

by Hardeep, Jiaen, and Arturo

This is Oakland International High School (OIHS). There are students from different countries and they all speak different languages. Always if you have friends from the same country you have a big group of friends but how about if someone is the only one from their country? Scared? There are three people that we interviewed they are the only one from their countries. We ask them lots of questions about what they feel about being alone in the school.

Nanako is a 17 year old girl from Japan. She is an llth grade student at OIHS. You cannot imagine how she came to the U.S.A. by herself. She was nervous on her first day in this new school, new country, and with a different language. An important thing is that she is the only student who is Japanese in this school that's why she felt lonely. In fact, she has to solve all difficult things in her school and life. In the school, she tries to talk with other students to make them friends, and a very hard thing for her is to study English and improve it. She wants to improve herself by living in a different country the U.S.A. One semester ago, she got changes in her life and she improved her English. Now she feels good in the school because she got new friends. She wants to go to college after she graduates from high school to get higher education.

Shazia is 18 years old from Afghanistan who came to the U.S.A. with her big family. She is an 11th grade student in OIHS. She and her family want to get a better life and have a bright future that's why they came to the U.S.A. When they first step in the U.S.A. it means their life will change and they have to solve many difficult things in this new country so they can make it better. After she came to the U.S.A. she started to go to school and studied her new language English in OIHS. When her first day came to OIHS she felt very scared for her new school and at that time she had problems because other students speak different languages and she cannot understand what are they talking about. It made her feel more scared and nervous. She asked herself what would she would do now. She studies very hard to learn English. She tried her best and teachers help her to learn English. Now she feels normal and she has many friends. She is not scared of this school anymore. After high school she wants to go to college or university to learn about medical science and to be a doctor for her future.

Tsering is a Tibetan boy. He is 17 years old and a 12th grade student in OIHS. He came to the U.S.A. with his family in 2008. He wants to change his life and get more education to help his future in the U.S.A. Before he came to school he was thinking that learning a new language and making new friends is difficult for him. He didn't feel happy when he came his first day to the school because he saw many Chinese guys. He can speak Mandarin but in this school many Chinese students speak Cantonese. He was still scared from language because the teacher's use English to teach students and he thinks learning culture, tradition and language are difficult for him. Just after two semesters he has seen big changes in his life. He can speak English to solve some problems, to made lots of friends from other countries. He joined the OIHS’s basketball team to make more friends. He will graduate and then he wants to go to Berkeley City College to continue his education.

They are all the only student from their countries in OIHS but they all are happy in OIHS. They are not scared in the U.S.A. because they learned English and have lots of friends. They have just one goal of studying English and then fullfilling their American Dreams.
